Class C Reviews

I'm not about to go buy every single firework I see (Well if I had the money I would!) and review it, but I will write about the ones I do get. If you happen to see something on this list while you are out buying fireworks you will know a bit about it.

Rockets

Clustering Bees (brand unknown) - There are probably multiple rockets with this same name (or at least this effect) and these were quite a bit weaker than other brands I have seen. The bee effect did not spread, was short lasting and didn't spark all that much.

Firefox (brand unknown) - Launches with a decent whistle, ends with weak report and crackle.

Flying Color Butterflies (brand unknown) - Small spark tail and weak burst of stars.

Gliterrious Lights (brand unknown) - Small spark tail and weak glittering burst.

Texas Whistler (brand unknown) - Launches with an annoying whistle, weak report.

Dixie Whistler w/double report (Great Grizzly) - Whistle with weak reports. I couldn't even hear them half the time they were so weak.

Dragon 8oz Rockets - You can't really expect much from most rockets, but they should at least be reliable. These were not! I had several of them explode instantly or very soon after the fuse burned down. Early payload ignition can be dangerous, especially with modified payloads.

Fountains

New! C-4 Stick Fountain (brand unknown) Ôø‡ Not actually a fountain, it has firecrackers inside that all go off at once. Pretty lame.

Mystery Lights (Great Grizzly) - Standard colors and spark height was nothing special. It did have a long duration and some nice crackle.

Castle Geyser (Black Cat) - Effects almost identical to Mystery Lights (above). Not great, not horrible.

Sizzler (TNT) - Most Class C fountains are pretty similar. This one had all the same effects as the above two fountains, with the only differences being at a couple points it had a mix of color stars instead of one color at a time and it had some whistle (which I find annoying).

Black Cat Silver Fan - A unique design (fan shaped), and nice silver spray, but the lack of any finale effect was a little disappointing.

Assorted city fountains - I got a 4-pack of these (New York, Los Angele,s Seattle, and something else) They had assorted effects, but none were that great and spark height wasn't very high.

Roman Candles

Be sure to see Inside Roman Candles.

New! Grizzlies Best Roman Candles (Great Grizzly) Ôø‡ Their best are not very good! Assorted effects, but all pretty weak.

Magical Roman Candle (brand unknown) - Red and green for 10 shots. Pretty boring, but at least the distances of each star were fairly consistent.

Hot Thunder (Great Grizzly) - The tubes for these are a lot bigger than other candles, so hopefully it's better right? Nope. Each shot is a rather quiet crackle with a weak report at the end. I'd stick to Black Cat candles personally...

Mad Dog 10 ball - Good distance and consistency, but the same effect (with maybe 3 different colors) over and over.

Black Cat Kaleidoscope - Assorted effects in one candle. Two thumbs up!

Black Cat Handful - A 5-pack of candles, each one with it's own effect such as salute, crackling and whistling rockets with report. These are some of the best candles around!

Spinners/Helicopters

New! Mini-Green Hornet (Black Cat) Ôø‡ Green color, but just more plastic basically. Stick to small bees.

Buzz Bomb (brand unknown) - Rises with good amount of orange sparks, decent report at end.

Apache I (Great Grizzly) - Same effect as Buzz Bomb, but weaker sparks and report.

Galileo (Brothers) - Looks fancy and has both color and report, but neither is really that good.

Large Sunflower (brand unknown) - Average color, but lots of sparks.

Crackling Tornado (brand unknown) - This was a plastic casing helicopter, and I have seen some very good ones, so I had high hopes. The spark volume was rather disappointing, but they did go pretty high.

Small Bees (brand unknown) Ôø‡ 12 to a box, these change color as they fly. No report or end effect, but they are classics!

Cakes

Be sure to see Inside a Cake.

New! Magical Barrage 100 Shot (brand unknown) Ôø‡ Just lots of red and green stars, not spectacular, but you might find a use for them. New! Earth Force (Black Cat) Ôø‡ Assorted mine effects, this is a very good cake for variety and a less common effect.

New! Gold Mine (Black Cat) Ôø‡ 12 rather wimpy gold mines with a gold break. The effects are small and weak.

New! Lightening Storm (Black Cat) Ôø‡ A large burst of silver bees, a very cool effect but gets old quickly and this has 19 shots. I would take it apart and refuse it so they all went at once.

Halley's Comet (brand unknown) - Whistling spinners. Pretty lame.

Twitter Glitter (brand unknown) - There are different sizes of this, the one I got was about 6 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter. They start out with a fountain then quickly fire a bunch of red and green stars. Doesn't sound that exciting, but I actually liked these. They could be very cool if you set off several at once spread out a bit.

Garden In Spring (brand unknown) - Starts with a weak fountain, then fires shells with small red and green breaks.

Explosions On Jupiter (Black Cat) - Shells fire with spark tail, turn to large silver spinners with silver fish. Not very loud (sometimes that is a good thing) and the spinners are excellent.

Just One More Time (Great Grizzly) - I was expecting a lame cake, but I was very surprised! Each shot is a good mine with colored stars and silver sparkling tails. The colors are all average, but the overall effect is very good! Highly recommended!

The Great Bear (Great Grizzly) - Another mine cake, but not nearly as good as Just One More Time. The mine effects are not as strong, but they do crackle at the end and achieve good coverage. I'd get Just One More Time, but if you can't, get this one.

Nuclear Submarine (Warhead) - Each shell has a rather weak break, first of red and green (yawn) but then some are orange/gold in color, not something you see often in Class C fireworks. Despite weak breaks, they get a recommendation for the color.

Jungle Rage (Great Grizzly) - The tails of the shells are good, and the breaks, while being average colors, are all rather large. At the end is a good finale volley of the last bunch of shells, definitely something that is nice to see.

Frenzy (Great Grizzly) - The shells are all multi-break and each break has a mix of colors. The shells go pretty high and look decent. Recommended.

Great Willow (Great Grizzly) - The same willow effect with each shot and no finale, but the willow effect is still quite good with long, dripping tails. Recommended.

Rock The House (Great Grizzly) - A 500 gram cake (the legal max). Each shell has a good tail and the breaks have an interesting pattern (I don't know if it's intentional or not, but it's cool). There is a finale at the end that is very big and noisy. I would strongly recommend this cake, however it will most likely be very expensive without a wholesale deal.

Chaos (Great Grizzly) - Another 500 gram cake, but this one has much larger tubes than Rock The House. Each tube contains two or three shells. The breaks are average and not especially varied, but it did have some nice magenta and orange color. This one is good, but I might go for Rock The House instead because of it's better finale and breaks.

Black Cat The Beast - Shell fires with white spark tail, changes to helicopter, then breaks with a few stars. Interesting effect, but stars are weak. No finale or anything, just the same thing at the same pace for 25 shots.

3 Times the Whistlers (don't know brand) - 20 (maybe 25?) shots of 3 stage whistling rockets. Good white spark tail and noise, break with white sparkle. While the break is small and there is no finale, I think they make up for it because of the launch and the extremely long distance each rocket travels. You will be surprised at how far they go!

Black Cat Double Decker - Gold comets with breaks. Not too exciting alone, but used in combination with other cakes/shells it would be nice.

Black Cat Red White and Blue - I don't remember the actual name of this one, but it has 3 rows of fanned tubes. It fires red, white and blue shells over and over. It's kind of boring, but the blue color is fairly good.

Black Cat Aerial Parade - A daytime cake with lots of good size parachutes with smoke.

Mushroom Cloud 19 shot - Medium size breaks without much in the way of color, but decent spinners in combination with the breaks.

War Head Battle of New Orleans - A combination of pearls and shells. Fairly bright colors (pink, green, etc) but tiny breaks with little noise.

Great Grizzly Rolling Thunder - I don't even remember what this one did, it sucks.

Great Grizzly Crown Jewel - The description was very long and sounded fancy, but it still sucked. Breaks were small, quiet and had weak colors. I don't like Great Grizzly anymore!

Shells

Be sure to see Inside Class C Shells.

Artillery Shell Kit (Great Grizzly, 6 shells) - Average shells, nothing spectacular.

Crackling Artillery Mortar Kit (Great Grizzly, 6 shells) - The crackle from these shells was somewhat weaker than other crackling shells I have seen.

Bullet Bomb Mortar (brand unknown, 12 shells) - Another average shell pack. If you can get them cheap, go for it.

Predator Canister Kit (Great Grizzly, 12 shells) - Good shells, large breaks and a variety of effects.

Big Bad Ass Kit (Great Grizzly, 12 double-break shells) - We had a few very low breaks using these, and I don't know whether it was from the shell quality or from using them in tubes other than what they came with. Either way, the breaks were good-sized for doubles with a variety of effects. I would recommend these or the Double X-Plosion Double Ball shells equally.

Grim Reaper (Great Grizzly, 24 shells) - 8 single-break, 8 "floral mine" shells, 8 triple-breaks. The single-break shells were all quite good, with spectacular charcoal sparks lingering in the sky for quite some time. The "floral mine" shells had a mine effect of a few stars shooting out of the tube as the shell launched and then broke. A very nice effect to compliment the good shells! The triple-break shells were a bit weak. The break from each of the 3 breaks was rather small and uninspiring. I would Recommend this kit just to get the other shells however. For multi-breaks I'd say stick with double-break.

Black Cat ProMag - 36 shells with single, double and triple breaks. It even came with a very sturdy HDPE mortar, which is a definite bonus! Good assortment of effects, lots of noise and color. Keep in mind that because the box says "Black Cat" on it, the price will usually be high.

Black Cat Star Spangled Cannon - 12 shells, good tails and decent breaks. Nothing spectacular, but still a good buy.

TNT Mortar Fire - 12 shells that look very fancy from the labels with pictures. It came with two tubes, but the bases of both broke after a few shots because they were very flimsy. I'm not sure how the actual shells performed because they were fired in 6-shot barrages mixed in with other brands.

4th of July Extravaganza 18 Shot Big Bad Artillery Shells - Very sturdy tube and the shells were packed full (no half empty cheapos like some!). Like the above shells, I didn't single them out for testing or anything, but I liked these a lot.

4th of July Extravaganza 18 Shot Big Bad Rambo Canister Artillery Shells - A very long brand name and product name, but still very good. Same sturdy tube as above shells, similar effects. Canister vs. round shells really doesn't matter in class C, but these are good shells.

4th of July Extravaganza 12 Shot Double X-Plosion Double Ball - Yet another long name from 4th of July Extravaganza, but these are excellent shells. See that "double ball" in the name? That doesn't mean the same thing as "double break" It means that when fired, it separates into two shells that break at almost the same time. Strongly recommended!

Other

New! Ruckus (brand unknown) Ôø‡ Like a tiny shell, it basically shoots a firecracker about 30 feet up and sounds like a bottle rocket going off. ItÔø‡s pretty stupid.

Warhead Launcher (Great Grizzly, 4 shots) - The WHL uses spin-stabilized rockets that travel quite fast and have an excellent color break for their size, much better than most rockets. The only problem is the launcher is not very sturdy and the rockets are very unpredictable. I would recommend these, but you should make your own launcher for them.

Be sure to see Inside the Warhead Launcher.

Crackling Balls (Great Grizzly) - There are many different brands of crackling balls, and all the ones I've seen have been better than the ones made by Great Grizzly.

Magic Whip (brand unknown) - Magic whip gets a bit old after a while, but I've heard it works well as fuse. It can also be wrapped in a bundle to all go in a couple seconds to make it a bit more exciting.

Land Mine (Great Grizzly) - This thing is just about 200 firecrackers all fused to go in about a second. It's not that loud, and pretty lame.

Signal Flare Strobes (brand unknown) - These things flash over and over very brightly. They are very annoying, but that makes them kind of fun.
